Warming Up with Elphaba

As Jemma Rix prepares to celebrate her 800th performance as Elphaba, we have a look at her warm up playlist to see just how you do get ready to sing Defying Gravity!

The first thing we notice is that it's 25 minutes long (most singers we work with do between 10 and 15) and concentrates on the earlier and gentler exercises. Jemma does 5 minutes of singing on hums before she even opens up to a vowel.

We also love the "Extending the Range" section of her playlist as it has all our favourites on it. Word has it that Curly Scales was Pavarotti's warm up of choice (hard to prove but that's what I was told when I first learned it!) It's a fabulous exercise because instead of just touching that top note once, you get the opportunity to "sing it in" 3 times before modulating up to the next top note.

Jemma finishes on "Long Oohs" which is a great way to leave your voice feeling warm yet relaxed. It's also helpful as a cool down.

When Jemma sent us through her playlist, she also added, "Elphaba is a very demanding role, and so it's important to be warm every night. I use this app every day... and I love it."

We're so glad you like it, Jemma and thanks for sharing your warm up with us!
