Warming Up with 'The Voice' star Sam Ludeman

Unless you were living under a rock this year (or in New Zealand and Asia as some of the Warm Me Up team were), you will have heard Sam Ludeman sing as one of the stars of The Voice.

So, then, it will be no surprise to you when you look at Sam's Warm Me Up playlist that all of his exercises focus on the High Male range.  Often, we find guys like to mix up the High Male and Low Male exercises - not for Sam, High Male all the way!

Sam begins his warm up gently with Lip Trills and Sirens, both excellent exercises particularly for getting your voice moving early in the morning.  He then moves on to some open vowels with Mayonnaise.  Mayonnaise is a great exercise for early in your warm up as it starts at the top note of the exercise and then moves down - really good for activating easy, head voice sounds.

Then he moves on to everyone's favourite, Curly Scales (you may remember from our last post that Jemma Rix loves this one too!) In the mouth workout section, Sam goes for Red Leather Yellow Leather.  This can be a really fun one especially if you mix up your nouns: try swapping "leather" for "lolly", "lorry" or even "lipstick"!

Sam is well-known for his high-standard of musicianship (he's an excellent guitarist and song-writer too) so it makes sense he finishes his warm up with one of the trickier exercises on Warm Me Up, The Aquarium.  This vocalise helps develop a fine sense of tuning and intonation as it uses a number of semi-tones and also helps cultivate good breath control and support.

Have a try at Sam's Warm Up and let us know how you go.  And when you're all warmed up, check out this awesome cover of Jet Lag for some inspiration!
